Device and Printer Management in Windows 7

Until the release of Windows 7, device and printer management was inefficient and time consuming. Need to see hardware configuration of a device? Go to the Device Manager. Need to see the storage device contents? Go to the My Computer. Want to change the settings used in a specific device? Go to the corresponding applet in Control Panel (Game Controller, Keyboard, Mouse, and so forth). If you use a multifunction fax machine, you might need to use many applets to deal with its printing, scanning, file management and faxing functions.

To make things easier, in Windows 7, the Devices and Printers offers a single entry point for controlling multifunction and single-purpose devices. Microsoft thinks Devices and Printers is so crucial to effective system management that the Devices and Printers applet is placed right on the Start menu.

Unlike the old Device Manager within the Control Panel, the icons displayed on the Windows 7’s Devices and Printers is restricted only for computer components that most users will identify as plug-in devices. Say, an external monitor plugged in a computer will be shown as an external device, however an internal monitor on a notebook will not. Device-specific settings are available in the context menu for each device; for example, the external monitor’s context menu, it provides a text link to the “Display Settings” applet in control panel.

The Devices and Printers applet supersedes the “Printers and Faxes” applet in earlier Windows OS versions; typical printer operations like setting the default printer, adding or uninstalling printers, and adjusting properties such as header and footer can be done through Devices and Printers.

It is possible to do many tasks efficiently at once, which vary depending upon the device characteristics. These are primary tasks you may do:

  • Browse all the external printers and devices connected to the computer.
  • Install a new printer or device to the computer.
  • Ensure that a specific device is properly connected and working just fine.
  • Display accurate information about existing devices, such as manufacturer, model, and make
  • See available tasks of a particular device.
